Overwatch 2 developers have revealed on social media that they have been harassed following the latest controversy about hero selection for Mythic skins and players are calling out the behavior.

On August 14, Blizzard revealed a slew of new content for Season 12, including a new Mythic skin for Reaper. Players, however, were not enthused by the developer’s choice for the rare skin, calling for other heroes like Ramattra to get Mythic cosmetics.

The controversy was further exacerbated when OW2 Game Director Aaron Keller revealed that Venture, a hero lacking in cosmetics, won’t receive a new skin until late 2024 at the earliest.

Some players were so up in arms over the lack of Mythics for their favorite heroes that they went after the game’s developers.

“it takes an entire squad to make a mythic and even though I’m incredibly proud of the work we did on Anubis Reaper I won’t be posting the dev roster. I’ve seen targeted harassment at our team who have already posted and I won’t be encouraging more of that,” Overwatch Mythic producer cappugccino said on social media.

Overwatch players responded to the claims of harassment by the devs on Reddit, calling out anyone who engaged in the behavior.

“I think sometimes people need to remember, there are people behind this game. It’s not EA or 2k and a yearly sports release. It’s a smaller team with their resources… people just need to chill out. The devs have made a lot of mistakes but you’d be blind to see that they aren’t trying,” one user said.

One player also pointed out that Season 12 was released with a ton of content outside of skins like the new hero Juno, a new game mode, and two new maps.

“People really need to have sympathy. They just had lay-offs a few months ago so it’s obviously gonna impact the game’s content pipeline for a while,” the player said.

Season 12 seems to be a mixed bag to start the new content cycle, but Overwatch players do seem to be enjoying the new season.

However, the developers might still be waiting for the other shoe to drop in terms of what the player base will get angry with next for Season 13, even with some players coming to their aid.
