The former legal chief of Pokemon has added their two cents in around Palworld, claiming that the game looks like a “ripoff” and is surprised the title “got this far”.

Palworld has quickly become one of the most popular games to launch in recent years. The open-world survival title has surged into the spotlight, rising up the charts on Steam. So much so that the game has come with its fair share of controversy with some users claiming the game has plagiarised from Pokemon.

Palworld offers players a huge open world to explore, filled to the brim with creatures called Pals who can be caught to fight alongside you. Not only can they fight alongside you, but they can also help build bases, be traded for money, be butchered for food and loot, and much more.

With the game’s surging popularity, it’s caught the attention of former Pokemon legal chief Dan McGowan, who gave their scathing two cents on the matter.

Palworld heat cold
Palworld has soared into social discourse, becoming one of the most talked about and controversial game releases of 2024.

McGowan, who previously worked as the head of The Pokemon Company’s legal team spoke with Game File about Palworld and its controversy. The former legal chief spoke about how Palworld seemed no different from the “usual ripoff nonsense” they would see each year in their role.

“This looks like the usual ripoff nonsense that I would see a thousand times a year when I was Chief Legal Officer of Pokemon,” they explained.

Not only that, but McGowan further reprimanded the title, claiming that they’re surprised the game has been making waves on the internet.

“I’m just surprised it got this far.”

With the popularity of Palworld only continuing to rise, it’s uncertain what’s in store for developers Pocketpair. Especially with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company not too pleased with the game’s success, it may mean we see a treacherous and lengthy legal battle if the devs decide to take action.
