Dedicated Pokemon player hikes over 1,000 miles to clear their Pokewalker
NintendoA Pokemon fan has put their old Pokewalker to work. Taking it with them on their hikes for over 1000 miles and unlocking the final area, catching themselves a Spiritomb in the process.
There’s been many iterations of Pokemon, and each new release of the game brings not only new monsters to catch, but new mechanics too. Back in 2009 when Nintendo released HeartGold and SoulSilver, the games came with an additional perk — the Pokewalker.
A pedometer designed to look like a Pokeball, the Pokewalker counted players’ steps whenever they took it out with them on a walk. It wasn’t only a cute fitness tracker though. The Pokewalker converted players’ steps to “watts” which they could use to gather items and level their team.
It even unlocked new areas where players had a chance to encounter rare Pokemon that couldn’t usually be obtained in either SoulSilver or HeartGold.
It’s been fifteen years since the Pokewalker made its debut. But some dedicated fans have still been using it to try and unlock all of its rewards. Back in 2022, a player earned the world’s first Pokewalker shiny. Now, another dedicated fan has shared their achievements on Reddit too.
After taking their Pokewalker on hikes over the past three years, they’d unlocked the final area, the Quiet Cave. And caught themselves a Spiritomb while they were at it.
While it costs 100,000 watts of energy to unlock the Pokewalker’s final area, other features cost watts too. Like using the Pokeradar to find rares or using the Dowsing Machine to find items.
The player said their “total step count came in at 2,234,829,” coming out to a total of “1,117 miles,” which they walked with their trusty Onix.
“This may be the hardest Pokémon to get legitimately. Congrats,” said one user, impressed by the achievement.
“A hiker with an onix. I gotta appreciate how in-character you are,” another joked.
