Pokemon fans obsessed with Net Ball alternatives concept
The Pokemon CompanyPokemon players love the new fanmade concepts for alternatives to the Net Ball, which would let them catch a wider variety of Pokemon in the overworld.
While most Pokemon fans are familiar with the Poke Ball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, and Master Ball (especially through their use in Pokemon Go), there are tons of variants in the series, but they have such specific uses that most players rarely bother using them.
What’s odd is that some Poke Ball concepts have natural counterparts that have never been used. There’s the Moon Ball, which works better on Pokemon that evolve using a Moon Stone, but there’s no equivalent Poke Ball for the Sun Stone.
Then you have the Net Ball, which, as its name suggests, is better at catching Bug or Water-type Pokemon. This was introduced in Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire, yet it never received any variants that affected their types.
Pokemon players love fanmade Net Ball variants
A user on the Pokemon Reddit named sdrey has created concepts for different Poke Balls that act similarly to the Net Ball, except they focus on different types of Pokemon. These Poke Balls would cover every type in the game, not just Bug and Water.
“The Magnet Ball is my favorite. I could definitely see using it. The Combat Ball looks stabby. Like I wouldn’t want to keep it in my pocket,” one user wrote, while another said, “I like that this opens up to Pokemon specific balls. I like the thorn ball the most.”
“We need more balls!” one user said, “It’s weird to me that they just stopped with the ones we have over multiple generations. Arceus introduced a few new retro balls which was cool, but they don’t transfer into SV as far as I’m aware. Definitely down for more catching options.”
Some users took issues with a few of the designs, “Thorn and combat balls look like they hurt to hold, throw or be hit by. Can we maybe find a way to soften them?”, one user wrote, and another said, “Some of these look painful to hold even if they look cool.”
The Pokemon series could definitely use more Poke Ball designs. It feels like there’s a lot of scope for introducing new ones, as many of the current ones (like the Moon Ball) are so niche that you’d never think to use them.
