Pokemon Go player slams “idiot” trainers for over-hyping IVs

A Pokemon Go player has revealed they are sick of players who “over-hype” the importance of IVs in the game and that trainers shouldn’t be concerned with the miniscule strength differences.

In Pokemon Go, every pocket monster in the mobile game is issued with IVs, which are randomised Individual Values.

These determine the different stats surrounding the HP, Attack, and Defense for each Pokemon. Therefore, players will naturally try and catch the best one they can.

However, one player has heavily criticized other players for putting too much importance on trying to get the highest IVs for their Pokemon and avoiding strong pocket monsters for having “trash” IVs.

Pokemon Go player outraged over trainers focusing on IVs

Pokemon Go player Prestigious_Time titled their post: “People being idiots about IVs,” stating it was not a “complaint but rather a brief rant” about how they’re “sick of people vastly overestimating the role of IVs.”

“Yes, if you are a hardcore gym grinder looking to max out all the best attackers, a world-class Master League PvP expert, or someone who cares about trophies or the hundo/3 star dex, IVs are important to keep track of. Otherwise, there is literally zero reason you should be concerned.”

During the lengthy post, they admitted: “I reached the end of my patience when I saw a horde of people advise someone with a 11/12/11 Zygarde (the single best PvP Pokémon) not to invest in it because of “trash IVs.””

Their overall issue with fellow trainers using IVs revolved around the “miniscule strength differences in the vast majority of contexts (particularly in my central example of Zygarde),” when using IVs. They claimed that a “mere 5% increase which would not make a difference anywhere but for very high-level PvP battles.”

Players soon chimed in to share their experiences: “I don’t do a lot of PvP, my biggest hangup with IVs is that if I invest in a Pokemon that’s say 13/13/13, I’ll forever be worried that I’ll get another one later with better IVs and not have enough candy to level it up.”

This caused another player to respond: “I feel like every Pokemon Go player knows this sentiment. The way I look at it is, if you happened to get a better IV Pokemon down the road, you still got the upgrade. It’ll be a little more delayed, but you will eventually power up that Pokemon too.”

To which the OP replied: “I feel the same way, it’s purely sentimental though. There’s a lot of regret when I max a 13/14/13 Pokémon and then a 15/15/15 of the same species comes along. My only point was to explain the real difference (rather lack thereof) between mid and perfect IVs.”

Many agreed with Prestigious_Time that IVs are “over-hyped” and echoed the thoughts that “people stressing over perfect IVs are wild. It mainly affects mirror matches. Most of the game is rock, paper, scissors and knowledge on what Pokemon can use what.”

Despite the backlash, various players still try and hold out to find the perfect Pokemon to start levelling up. One in demand is the Thundurus, which we have explained exactly how to find the perfect IV version.
