Pokemon Go players are only now discovering what the subtle differences between PokeStops mean and how they influence what they do.

The PokeStops in Pokemon Go are a vital resource for players, as they provide free items and can act as spawning points for the Team Rocket Grunts and their powerful leaders, giving you the chance to catch Shadow Pokemon.

The PokeStops also act as natural gathering points for fans, especially as many are placed near famous landmarks and tourist stops. This means that Pokemon Go players regularly see PokeStops throughout their day, playing the game and exploring the overworld.

The fact that PokeStops are such a regular sight means that they become part of the background. However, many players aren’t even aware that PokeStops have different designs, indicating what’s currently happening with them.

Pokemon Go players are discovering what the shapes & heights of the PokeStops mean

A user on the Pokemon Go Reddit created a thread asking what the differences were between the PokeStops with square and round bases. It turns out that there’s more to the PokeStop designs than anyone realized.

“There is a power-up feature that levels the PokeStop up by scanning the PokeStop – this is indicated by a round bottom. Square bottom is a normal stop,” one user said, explaining the differences.

“Not really, but their height matters,” one user explained, “If a Pokestop is taller than the rest, it can be scanned (filmed) for bonus rewards. If a Pokestop has a white circle around it, it means that you haven’t spun it yet.”

“If an unreachable Pokestop’s square starts rotating violently, it means there’s a Team GO Rocket grunt taking it over.”

“What about the blue posts with a vertical diamond pattern well below the top (below the blue circle/square you are talking about)?” one user asked, and another answered, “I believe that indicates a sponsor stop? Like corporate sponsors.” This refers to the advertising PokeStops that exist in Pokemon Go.

Scanning a PokeStop’s Photo Disc by getting close to it is possible. This can be done to increase its level, which means it will provide better items and cause its appearance to change. If you live near one, it’s worth taking the time to boost it, as it will provide better loot in the future.
