Pokemon players stunned by “madness” price of DS game
THE POKEMON COMPANYA Pokemon fan has spotted a boxed copy of a classic DS title being sold for a ridiculously high price at a retro store.
It’s common for the price of video games to go lower over time, but that’s not the case for many mainline Pokemon games. The retro Pokemon games can often increase in price over time, depending on their condition.
The Nintendo DS games are a curious example of this, as it’s the second best-selling video game console of all time, yet the Pokemon titles on the system command ridiculous prices online, especially Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver, which are often cited as the best entries in the series.
The fact that Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver used the Pokewalker meant that boxed versions of the game with the accessory could lift the price even higher. Still, even without the Pokewalker, the Gen 2 remakes can cost an arm and a leg to buy in the box.
Pokemon fan spots $1400 SoulSilver in the wild
A user on the Gaming Reddit has shared a photo they took of a copy of Pokemon SoulSilver spotted in a store. This copy of the game was priced at $1400 due it still being sealed, which is considerably more than similar copies on eBay, which go for between $750-900.
“The pricing on SS and HS are insane. They’re highly sought after, but not many in circulation, so the price is higher than necessary. Been trying to find a SS to buy myself but gave up very quickly,” one user lamented.
“If they would JUST. PORT THIS. TO THE SWITCH. At least the OG Gameboy version; they’re subscribership to Switch Online would skyrocket,” one user pointed out, referring to the lack of support for older Pokemon games on the Switch.
“HG/SS do have a lot of resale value, granted not $1400 worth but they do end up selling higher than most older Pokemon games. I’m not exactly sure why,” one user wrote, while another said, “The guy who ends up buying it for $800 will think he got a bargain.”
The high price for the Gen 2 remakes is due to a mixture of factors. The games are beloved, so people don’t want to sell them, and they came with an accessory that is not only useful to own for the game, but was never made available for future titles.
As such, the Gen 2 remakes will continue to demand high prices for the foreseeable future, barring any kind of remake or remaster by The Pokemon Company.
