Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 players think the final boss fight makes no sense
Insomniac GamesPlayers are questioning why Insomniac chose to have the final boss fight of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 play out the way it does.
Over the course of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker and Miles Morales are confronted with people from their pasts who have changed in dramatic ways. Second chances are a major theme of the story, and both Spider-Men have as many inner demons to fight as external ones.
All of this culminates in a dramatic boss fight with Venom after the symbiote has taken over New York. Here, both Peter and Miles have to fight a massive and dangerous threat made sympathetic by the human host still living inside.
However, players are disappointed by one part of the final boss fight, believing it lessens the impact of the game’s story as a whole.
Note, spoilers for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s ending to follow.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 players wish Peter was playable for final fight instead of Miles
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reveals that Harry Osborne, Peter’s childhood best friend, was treated for a degenerative disease using an alien symbiote. This ultimately turns him into Venom and causes Harry to wreak havoc over the city as the symbiote attempts to overtake all of New York.
The Spider-Men, of course, come out on top in the end following a dramatic confrontation. However, this final boss fight has proven controversial.
While the fight starts with Peter taking on the creature that corrupted both him and his best friend, he is defeated, leaving Miles to take over. Though players do take control of Peter again for the very end, it’s Miles who gets the last true boss fight of the game.
This decision has confused many fans, such as Reddit user JudaiDarkness, who wish the order had been swapped.
As they point out, “[Miles] has barely any connection to Harry or the Symbiote in comparison to what Peter went through with them.”
Some commenters have tried to find explanations for Insomniac’s decision. One speculated that it’s because Peter will get the final battle of a potential sequel that wraps up the story as a trilogy, and the developers wanted to give Miles this one.
Others suggested Miles taking over against Venom represents him being capable of becoming New York’s sole Spider-Man when Peter semi-retires at the end. As one commenter put it, “if miles were to lose it wouldn’t make sense for Peter to be ok with him taking over for a while.”
Another points out that Miles is nearly defeated by Venom and is saved by MJ before Peter finally takes the villain down.
While there’s some logic to the choice, it’s still understandable why players would be disappointed or underwhelmed by how the ending plays out. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 spends a lot of time fleshing out the relationship between Peter and Harry and their shared dream to “heal the world.”
Even if the story justifies it, it makes sense why fans would be disappointed by Miles vs. Venom being the final boss fight.
