Devin Haney responds to Ryan Garcia’s dad jibe and makes “face of boxing” claim

Devin Haney has predicted that it will be Ryan Garcia’s father throwing in the towel for his son when the pair meet on April 20.

Haney and Garcia will lock horns for the first time at professional level having fought six times in the amateurs, with Haney putting his WBC super-lightweight title on the line in Las Vegas.

Garcia said that he hoped for Haney’s sake that his dad would step in on the night to stop the fight but Haney laughed that comment off in an interview with DAZN.

“His dad is going to be there too so we’ll see who stops it,” Haney said. “I think his dad is going to be the one throwing in the towel and stopping the fight.

“Ryan has always been a good fighter, since we were kids but I feel like over time I have grown past him, gotten a lot better, and Ryan has stayed the same, and that’s for me to show on April 20.”

Haney keen to prove he is the new face of boxing

Haney said that he believed the fight is the biggest fight in 2024, and that victory will prove that he is the “new face of boxing”.

He added: “Expect fireworks. It’s been a long time coming. We’re three and three in the amateurs, and this is number seven, so this is how I’m going to seal the deal to prove who’s the better man, who’s got better since the amateurs, who’s developed into the pros better. It’s time for me to show the world how great I really am.

“Experience matters especially at that high level. Ryan does not have that experience, Ryan has not fought the guys that I’ve fought.

“I feel like my experience going in with a guy like Loma (Vasiliy Lomachenko), going to Australia – not once but twice – fighting [George Kambosos Jr.] in front of 40,000 people. That molded me for these times and on April 20 I will show it.”
