Misfits boxer claims Wayne Rooney vs Jake Paul would be “bigger than Super Bowl”
YouTube/Birmingham City/Sky SportsA fight between Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney and Jake Paul would be “bigger than the Super Bowl”.
That is the verdict of Paul’s sparring partner, and Misfits Boxing star, Anthony Taylor, who believes the fight would “bring more eye balls to the sport” than Floyd Mayweather’s fight with Conor McGregor.
Reports emerged earlier this month that Rooney was in talks with Misfits over possibly swapping the football pitch for the boxing ring.
While Rooney said “you never know” when quizzed about the reports, he insisted last week his immediate priority is to return to the dugout following managerial spells with Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City.
Wayne Rooney vs Jake Paul would “shatter pay-per-view records”
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has talked up the possibility of a fight between Rooney and Paul at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, after some encouraging messages from Rooney.
YouTuber, Paul, holds an 8-1 record in the boxing ring, with wins over former UFC fighters Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley and Anderson Silva on his resume.
The only blemish on his record is split decision defeat to Tommy Fury and there is talk the pair could be in line for a rematch.
But if Rooney was to make the move to boxing, Taylor feels a fight between England’s record goalscorer and Paul would “shatter all pay-per-view records”.
“Wayne Rooney would be the perfect addition to the Misfits roster,” Taylor told OBC Scores.
“He’s a football icon, he’d bring more eye balls to the sport of boxing than Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather did.
“He’d bring in a global audience, which would be great for Misfits, and great for crossover boxing. It doesn’t matter who Rooney fights, he’d probably shatter all pay-per-view records.
“Imagine Wayne versus Jake Paul, that would be bigger than the Superbowl and I’d be backing my boy Jake every time, even though I’ve heard Rooney knows how to handle himself.
“An easier fight to make, though, would be Rooney and John Fury, that would be pure carnage, can you imagine the build up?
“John’s calling out Carl Froch at the moment – that’s a bridge too far for John because Froch was a world champion – but Rooney and John Fury, or Rooney and Jake Paul, wow, boxing doesn’t get any bigger.”
