Florida Sheriff Deputy has “life saved” after Apple Watch alerts him of heart issue
DexertoA Florida Sheriff Deputy may have had his life saved after his Apple Watch warned him of heart rate issues that led to a shocking diagnosis.
Since the launch of the first Apple Watch, the included health sensors have come in handy for many users across the world.
The heart rate sensor, for example, has helped many with previously unknown heart issues thanks to its alerts for high and low heart rates.
Florida Sheriff Deputy Luke Heyman recently received a shocking diagnosis that may have saved his life, and he has his Apple Watch to thank.
Florida man has life saved by Apple Watch heart alert
According to a local news publication, the Sarasota Deputy Sheriff says he received a “high heart rate” notification. Two days later, he felt sick and received the same alert from his Apple Watch.
This prompted him to go to the hospital, but doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with Heyman. He told the local news that he started feeling sick again and his heart rate jumped to 160 beats per minute for the third time so he went back to the hospital.
“When I went to the ER, they did a CT scan with some contrast. They found that I had multiple blood clots in each of my lungs,” he said.
Dr. Kapadia, a cardiologist based out of Tampa, Florida, said that there’s a good chance the deputy would have had a worse outcome had he not gone to the ER the second time.
“I’m glad that he had that watch with him. He looked at some of the notices and the alerts that came up and he said, ‘Something doesn’t sound right, let me get it checked out,'” he said.
“I think, in this deputy’s case, this was maybe a life saved as a result of it.”
Heyman also says that he ended up writing a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook, who replied just hours later to thank him for sharing.
