Framework Computer, the company known for their modular laptop design, says that customer names & emails were stolen in a hack.

Launched for the first time back in 2021, the Framework Laptop 13 came into the market as one of the world’s first modular laptop computers.

Framework gives you the right to repair your device, and the modular system allows you to swap out different modules to make the computer fit your needs the best.

On January 11, 2024, a user on the company’s forum shared an email they received from Framework revealing the data breach.

Framework customer information stolen

In the email, Framework revealed that a hacker impersonating the company’s CEO emailed a third-party accountant, who responded with a spreadsheet that featured various customer information.

The sheet included full name, email address, and balance owed for a subset of customers who have open pre-orders for one of their new products. However, a handful of customers with completed past orders made it into the list as well.

Framework shared what they’ve done to resolve the issue as well. “29 minutes after the external accounting consultant had responded to the attacker (8:42am PST on January 11th, 2024), Framework’s Head of Finance was made aware of the breach,” they said.

“At that point, he informed Keating Consulting leadership of their error, and escalated the incident to Framework leadership for immediate review and handling. Upon escalation, we identified all impacted customers to enable mass-notification of the breach (this email).”

They also warned that the bad actors could use the information to impersonate Framework, and detailed why and how they will ever reach out for payment information.

Users quickly took to the forums to post their thoughts as well, with many sharing their appreciation for the swift response.
