Nvidia poised to make PC CPUs but it’s not what you think
Nvidia is poised to start creating Arm CPUs, according to a new report. It’s believed that the company hopes to create Arm chips which could land as soon as 2025.
Nvidia is well-known for its GPUs and supercomputer chips, but the company is looking for a new frontier according to a Reuters report. Both Nvidia and AMD are preparing to launch Arm-based CPUs within the next several years.
The biggest force behind the adoption of Arm chips being used in mainstream PCs is Apple, whose first M1 CPU debuted in 2020. Since then the company is rumored to be working on a third revision, named M3, while Microsoft appears eager to take aim at Apple and close the distance between their mainstream x86-based OS, and Apple’s lighter, speedier MacOS.
There’s an undeniable advantage to laptops using Apple’s silicon, they have unrivaled battery life, while still offering fantastic performance for everyday tasks, and even content-creation workloads. It seems that Microsoft is also eager to ensure that they are not relying on one single sole chip vendor, Qualcomm, to offer Arm chips in upcoming Windows devices,
Nvidia’s entry into the PC CPU industry would only help them settle their sky-high valuation, as well as diversify their overall product offering. More importantly, it would also prevent Qualcomm from having a monopoly on Arm CPUs in upcoming PCs.
But, right now there are only a scant few details on what Microsoft might be working on, as migrating applications and creating translation layers for unsupported apps might be a huge problem, as you won’t just be able to get every app up and running since the processors used will have fundamentally different architectures.

AMDThe report also states that AMD could also be working on Arm CPUs, and this will come as no surprise, as AMD is a veteran chip manufacturer, and offers a much more power-efficient x86 CPU than its competitors, Intel, who failed to make waves with its 14th generation CPUs in the manner that AMD has with its Ryzen 7000 3D chips. Either way, we eagerly await any inkling of news, as a shift to Arm processors could fundamentally change the PC industry.
