13 Going on 30 is getting a musical adaptation

This thirty, flirty, and thriving movie is about to head to the stage, as 13 Going on 30 is getting its own musical adaptation.

A lot of different properties have been getting their own musical lately. There’s been Mrs Doubtfire, Stranger Things, and now, a popular rom-com from the early 2000s.

13 Going on 30, Jennifer Garner’s hit flick, is now set to get a musical adaptation from the film’s original writers, ala Mean Girls the Musical.

While there’s been limited promotional information so far, this production is clearly something to get excited about.

13 Going on 30 is headed to the London stage

13 Going on 30 The Musical is set to premiere next summer in London, with original writers Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa helming the project. But for those who are impatient, they will also be holding a two-week workshop at the Battersea Arts Centre next month.

The music and lyrics will be covered by Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary – of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series fame – and direction will be by Andy Fickman, who also directed Heathers the Musical. Casting is yet to be announced.

The plot of the musical will likely follow that of the film, which is: “A girl who’s sick of the social strictures of junior high is transformed into a grownup overnight. In this feel-good fairy tale, teenager Jenna (Christa B. Allen) wants a boyfriend, and when she’s unable to find one, she fantasizes about being a well-adjusted adult. Suddenly, her secret desire becomes a reality, and she is transformed into a 30-year-old (Jennifer Garner). But adulthood, with its own set of male-female challenges, isn’t as easy as it looks.”

The stage adaptation has actually been in the works for a number of years, and will be produced by theater company Royco.

As stated by said Goldsmith and Yuspa (via Variety), “When we poured our middle school pain into the movie 13 Going on 30, we never quite imagined it would stick around to this day as a rom-com parents show their kids, a Halloween costume, a scene in an Ariana Grande music video, and a teen sleepover staple.

“Now we’re thrilled to be bringing our pain across the pond with 13 Going on 30 The Musical. It’s been endlessly fun working with ROYO, Todd Garner, Revolution Studios, composer/lyricists Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, and director Andy Fickman to reinvent this story for the London stage. We can’t wait for a new generation to grab some Razzles and feel thirty, flirty, and thriving.”
