Yellowstone 1923 Season 2: Filming updates, cast & plot speculation

As if it weren’t enough to travel back to the Dutton Ranch’s inception in 1883, Taylor Sheridan had to do it all over again in 1923. Fans saw the Duttons battling to keep their ranch amid rising local tensions and major historical advancements. (Why drive a car when you can ride a horse?)
As the second of Yellowstone prequels, 1923 stood out from the get-go. And with the killer 1923 cast, it became clear that the Dutton family tree was growing in greatness.
Despite the original series ending with Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, 1923 is continuing with Season 2. Here’s everything you need to know about the second season of the Yellowstone spinoff.
Is there a 1923 Season 2 release date?
1923 Season 2 will premiere Sunday, February, 2025, exclusively on Paramount+.
Unlike 1883, which is a standalone story, the second season renewal for 1923 was confirmed earlier in February 2023. Given its premiere was the most-watched of 2022 across the US on cable, drawing in 7.4 million viewers, it’s not surprising.
Before the 2023 industry strikes, predictions suggested it could arrive on screens in late 2023 if not 2024. However, in June 2023, it was revealed that the second chapter of the show would be delayed indefinitely, and this was only emphasized by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Of course, since 2023, Taylor Sheridan added new projects to his plate, including Landman, Yellowstone 2024, and 1944. All this pushed 1923 Season 2 further and further into the background.
Now Paramount has finally announced the release date along with exciting new details about the season. With Yellowstone Season 5 wrapping up, it’s great time for fans of Taylor Sheridan’s growing worlds to have new visits to the Dutton ranch to look forward to.
Yellowstone 1923 Season 2 cast

One person who won’t be returning is James Badge Dale as John Dutton Sr., who died in Episode 3. We also won’t see Marley Shelton as Emma Dutton in Season 2, as her character took her own life following James’ death, nor Jennifer Ehle’s Sister Mary, as Teonna murdered her in an act of revenge.
In June 2024, it was announced that Jennifer Carpenter (who played Debra Morgan on Dexter) was joining the cast as Mamie Fossett, “a highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time.”
1923 Season 2 trailers
Alongside 1923’s release date announcement, Paramount released a pair of teaser trailers. The first sees Jacob (above) assessing the fallout of Season 1’s harsh winter, and the continued antagonism of forces vying for the Dutton family’s land. “This ranch is under attack. Our way of life is under attack,” Jacob says in response, “I’m asking you to protect it.”
The second trailer highlights an injured Spencer Dutton explaining, “I am needed in Montana, our family is in danger… I don’t have time!”
There isn’t a full trailer yet, and of course these are brief snippets, but they reveal a Season 2 that will pick up right where Season 1 left off, with all our protagonists beset by danger.
1923 Season 2 plot speculation
1923 Season 2 is expected to follow the return of Spencer Dutton to Montana, Teonna’s treacherous journey home, and the range war over the Dutton ranch following Donald Whitfield’s financial scheme.
Season 1 left plenty of questions for Season 2 to answer, namely the issue of how the Duttons are going to save their ranch from the financial clutches of Donald Whitfield. He’d paid the property tax on the ranch, meaning that if the Duttons couldn’t pay him back, the land would be his.
Season 2’s official synopsis promises to throw the family right back in the thick of it all:
“In the second season of 1923, a cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacob (Ford) and Cara (Mirren) back at Dutton ranch. With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer (Sklenar) embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana. Meanwhile, Alexandra (Schlaepfer) sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love.”
While the synopsis does hint at dangerous journeys for Spencer, Alex, Jacob, and Cara, it’s still keeping Jennifer Carpenter’s determined agent of the law a closely guarded secret. If the Duttons’ luck is a useful indicator, chances are high she’ll be another thorn in their sides. Plus, there’s also the question of whether Teonna will eventually be able to truly escape the clutches of the evil boarding school.
How many episodes of 1923 Season 2 are there?
Based on previous comments made by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, the second season will run for eight episodes.
ParamountSheridan said as much in a December 2022 interview with Deadline, where he explained how he sold Paramount on the idea during a phone call.
He, apparently, told the network in part, “‘…I need to do this in two blocks. An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up.'”
How to watch Yellowstone 1923 Season 2
1923 Season 2 will be available to stream on Paramount+ upon release, with the first episode likely premiering on the Paramount Network before its run is exclusive to the streaming platform.

Will there be a Season 3?
As it stands, 1923 Season 2 will be the last installment of the prequel series. There are no plans for a third.
It appears this was always the plan for Taylor Sheridan, who told Deadline that Season 2 is technically “the second half of the season.
“This one is different than 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself and I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got.
‘Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice’. For them, it is great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”
