It’s not been the best of starts for Netflix’s take on Avatar: The Last Airbender, with fans already calling the live-action series a “hot pile of garbage.”

The age-old dilemma of whether we really need remakes of already great content has really been called into question with Netflix‘s Avatar: The Last Airbender.

As more news was revealed about the show, fan opinion quickly became divided – which wasn’t helped by the proposed changes of key narrative elements.

Now that all eight episodes are available to watch on the streaming platform, viewers have roasted the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender as being a “hot piece of garbage.”

Fans say Netflix’s Avatar series is a “hot pile of garbage”

Avatar: The Last Airbender has officially released on Netflix, with fans already dubbing it as a “hot pile of garbage.”

Viewers have been up in arms about the removal of classic elements from the show’s storyline, including Sokka’s ingrained sexism, and the iconic side quests – you can read more about those changes here.

At the same time, initial critic reviews for the Netflix adaptation haven’t been overwhelmingly positive. Our own review of the show reads: “As intricate and whimsical as Avatar: The Last Airbender looks in live-action format – and as much as the representation delivers – the substance behind it just isn’t there.

“Fans of the original are likely to be raging on Reddit in a matter of minutes after this review drops, and we can’t blame them. But don’t panic too much – it’s definitely a step up from the movie.”

Alistair Ryder from Looper agreed, adding: “No amount of visual effects could make this live-action remake more dynamic to young eyes than the vibrant, hand-drawn animation — no matter how much the creators have attempted to replicate several scenes to the letter.”

It’s not too surprising that fans have also jumped in with scathing comments, with one user posting on X/Twitter “Let’s go see the hot pile of garbage they churned out! Already know it won’t follow the source material.”

“This will flop, I’ll see it today, but I know it will be bad, those graphics look childish,” a second weighed in, with a third musing, “I think I speak for EVERYONE when I say that WE are NOT watching.”

However, not all opinions have been negative, with another fan disagreeing “EPISODE 1 AND 2 GREAT GREAT GREAT,” and “Those first 3 minutes went crazy af.”

All episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender are now available to watch on Netflix.
