Barbie movie: You can now buy Sugar Daddy Ken
Warner Bros.Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie has increased popularity in the dolls, even the discontinued ones, such as Sugar Daddy Ken.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie of course features multiple versions of Barbie and Ken, all of which are based on real dolls that you can buy. However, there are a number of discontinued dolls that are also featured within the movie.
This includes Growing Up Skipper (the Barbie whose chest grows), Midge (the pregnant Barbie), and Barbie Video Girl (the Barbie with a camera and TV installed in her). There’s also plenty of Kens, including the iconic Magic Earring Ken (if you know, you know) and Sugar Daddy Ken.
Now, if the name “Sugar Daddy Ken” has sparked your morbid curiosity, then get ready to be even more excited, as a new version of the doll is set to be released in the movie’s honor.
What is Sugar Daddy Ken?
Sugar Daddy Ken, or rather, the “Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken” doll, was originally released in 2009 as a special edition doll exclusive to the Barbie 50th anniversary line. Priced at $82, he was described as a doll that “exemplifies fantastic Palm Beach fashion.”
In the movie, in which he is played by comedian Rob Brydon, he joins the fight with the other discontinued Barbies as they attempt to dethrone Ken and his patriarchy.
Why the name? Well, the doll owns a dog named Sugar, and as this Ken is considerably older, he considers himself to be her daddy. Though obviously Mattel was not unaware of the name’s implications. While the company initially tried to dissuade everyone’s dirty assumptions, Mattel spokesperson Michelle Chidoni later told ABC that “At the end of the day, this collection is targeted toward adults. While the name of the doll does refer back to the dog, I think people are going to interpret it as they want to interpret it.”
However, the doll proved too controversial and too unpopular, and was discontinued within a year, solely becoming a collector’s item. Until now.
Where can I get a Sugar Daddy Ken?
Sugar Daddy Ken can currently be pre-ordered from Mattel, and will be available for purchase as of October 12.
As stated by the website, “Inspired by “Sugar’s Daddy” in Barbie The Movie, this collectible Ken doll looks positively dapper in his pastel suit. Taking inspiration from both his character on the big screen as well as a piece of Mattel history, he comes with a little white dog named Sugar. Celebrating Barbie The Movie, “Sugar’s Daddy” Ken doll makes a great gift for fans of Ken – and Sugar!”
