“Weird” 2024 horror movie gets roasted for new trailer
Gravitas VenturesA “weird” 2024 horror movie just released its first trailer and is now facing the wrath of the online community – while some are roasting the film, others say it’s got “Smile vibes.”
We’re spoiled for choice when it comes to horror in 2024 – up next is Diablo Cody’s Lisa Frankenstein, followed by Imaginary from Blumhouse and Abigail from Scream filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
If that weren’t enough, Art the Clown will be making a festive return in Terrifier 3 later this year. And then there’s the horrifying Longlegs, which has already been hailed the “scariest movie of 2024” – ahead of its release.
We’re also getting a feature-length iteration of a successful horror short, but according to the internet, it’s going to be one of the movies of the year.
“Weird” 2024 horror movie gets roasted for new trailer
A trailer for Cellphone, the full-length version of Luke Sommer’s 2012 short Cell Phone, dropped online over the weekend, and it’s now getting roasted in the comments section for its frothy thrills and campy acting.
“Haven’t laughed this hard at a trailer since Smile,” wrote one, while another quipped, “So we had a haunted pool movie and now we have a haunted cell phone movie. What’s next, a haunted printer?”
A third joked, “Definitely seems like a movie,” while a fourth added, “It looks like it’s made for TV… some 20 years ago.” And a fifth chimed in, “Phone shows creepy and scary things, continues using said phone smh.”
“The demons would get trapped in my Nokia 6120,” said another, while one said it has “Smile vibes.” But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing – sure, Smile’s trailer was hilarious, but the movie turned out to be one of the best horrors of 2022.
One commenter also wrote, “Let me guess, this started off as a short film…” And they’re not wrong – Gravitas Ventures’ Cellphone is based on Luke and Rachel Sommer’s 2012 Cell Phone, meaning it’s been a long ride to get the full-length version realized. You can check out the original below:
As per the official synopsis for the full-length movie: “Wynne, who is suffering PTSD from the death of her fiancé, starts seeing disturbing images on her cell phone about her future. If she doesn’t figure them out in time, she will die.”
Bizarrely, it stars A Clockwork Orange and If icon Malcolm McDowell, which is enough of a reason to go and see what it’s all about.
If you’re interested, Cellphone premieres on February 13, 2024 – and you can find more of our horror content here.
