More often than not, a new film comes out and immediately gets swamped with bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. This time, it’s Chris Evans’ Netflix movie Pain Hustlers.

Starring Emily Blunt alongside Evans, Pain Hustlers was first released on the streaming platform on Friday, October 20.

As per the film’s synopsis, “After losing her job, a woman who’s struggling to raise her daughter takes a job out of desperation. She begins work at a failing pharmaceutical startup, but what she doesn’t anticipate is the dangerous racketeering scheme she’s suddenly entered.”

Not only has Chris Evan’s new film failed to chart in Netflix‘s top 10, it hasn’t been much of a hit with critics and viewers either.

Chris Evans’ Netflix film Pain Hustlers gets 26% on Rotten Tomatoes

As of October 24, 2023, Chris Evans’ film Pain Hustlers has debuted at 26% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.

Rotten Tomatoes describes the overall critics’ consensus of the film as: “[Pain Hustlers] has some great actors and a worthwhile premise, but lackluster execution dooms this dramatic look at the opioid epidemic.”

Richard Roeper at the Chicago Sun-Times said: “A well-acted and initially gripping story that loses momentum about halfway through and undergoes severe and often implausible shifts in tone,” with Wenlei Ma at PerthNow agreeing: “The film takes no creative risks while leaning into all the cliches. There’s just nothing new here.”

“Pain Hustlers waits until very late in the game to really drive home the horrors behind the opioid epidemic. For too long we’re complicit with its characters. And maybe that’s what it’s is going for; but if so, it leaves an unpleasant aftertaste,” stated Chris Knight from Original Cin.

“Pain Hustlers is a waste of great actors and an interesting premise that’s unfortunately been exhausted by other more worthwhile documentaries and fictional portrayals that have come before it. Chaotically-paced, predictable, dirty, and unfunny,” said Matthew Crieth from Matinee with Matt.

However, the Pain Hustlers reviews weren’t all doom and gloom.

“Formulaic Netflix fare. Blunt and Evans are both having a lot of fun. Yates has nothing of value new to say about the opioid crisis, it feels too long and lacks bite, but it’s still highly entertaining because of its high energy,” said Aaron White of Feelin’ Film Podcast.
