Beloved Doctor Who actor David Tennant has revealed what fans can expect from his return for the 60th anniversary of the series, teasing that these new episodes are “unlike” anything fans have seen before.

The Doctor Who franchise is an icon series, one that sees many big-name British actors take on the titular mantle for multiple seasons or years before it is then reincarnated into a new version.

Of all the different Doctors, one who seems connected to the role and the fan base the most is David Tennant. While the actor is best known for playing the 10th Doctor in the franchise, Tennant is coming back once again, this time as a whole new Doctor.

In an interview for Empire Magazine, Tennant hinted at what fans can expect from the upcoming 60th anniversary episodes of Doctor Who. Revealing that they are completely fresh and different to what the community has come to expect from the long-running franchise.

“I was surprised when I saw what that first script was based on, then I read the second script, which is unlike any Doctor Who episode ever,” Tennant began “These new specials are Russell off the leash…It’s like the band getting back together for one last hurrah.”

Later in the interview, Tennant spoke more about his return in particular, once again expressing that he will be portraying Doctor number 14 and not number 10 as he has previously.

“That was the first exciting piece of mischief that Russell created. I was going to be Doctor No. 14 rather than Doctor No. 10 again. You’ll just have to wait and see why the 14th Doctor is so much like the 10th.”

Doctor Who season 14 is set to premiere on Christmas Day of 2023. It picks up after Jodie Whittaker’s reign as the first female Doctor.

As part of the 60th anniversary specials, fans can expect to see Tennant back as well as another British icon in Catherine Tate. These episodes are set to drop the month prior in November 2023.
