Evil Season 4 finale ending explained & how Episode 14 teases more

The Evil finale is here. Whether Season 4 Episode 14 is truly the end of the supernatural series or not, it tied up some loose ends for David, Kristen, and Ben.

Despite knowing the series probably wouldn’t get picked up for Season 5, Evil Season 4 stayed true to its mystery of the week formula. AI has been the buzzword (because of course) of the batch, with creators Michelle and Robert King making statements on where they stand.

We started this final season with Kristen, David, and Ben investigating a tech company, the Vatican’s secrecy continuing to cause David problems, and Kristen’s personal issues intensifying.

It has played like a show unsure of whether this is its last trip around the sun (even if Episode 14 is titled ‘Fear of the End’). The Evil finale sticks with that approach, ending things nicely while not closing the door on future stories. Episode 14 spoilers ahead.

Evil finale ending explained

The Evil finale ends in Rome. The Bouchards and David are creating a new life together. Ben is absent, due to deciding to stay in his new job. The very last scene reveals the truth about Timothy.

The series finishes on a relatively nice note: David and Kristen – along with her daughters – will continue assessing in Italy after the church won’t fund them anymore.

Robert King told TV Insider, “They’re charming and there’s so much chemistry between Mike [Colter] and Katja [Herbers]. It was hard to think of this scene where they were all in separate worlds, so we wanted them together.”

He continued, “And maybe it’s a hope for us too with Evil since Paramount+ said no, maybe Roman TV in Italy will say we want more and they will bring us to Rome where we will shoot it.”

Although… there’s a catch to the hopeful conclusion.

This is where the writing shows there’s still hope for renewal: we end on a semi-cliffhanger. The chuckling Timothy says he trusts Kristen enough to show her his true nature.

His eyes glow and we see some non-human teeth in his mouth. The baptism definitively did not work, and David is left none the wiser when we fade to black.

Kristen

Kristen survived the Evil Season 4 finale after facing off against Leland. Ben and David convinced her not to kill him, though she clearly wanted to.

She decided to move her family to Rome with David and then learned the truth about Timothy. She chooses not to tell David she may have seen the real Antichrist, at least not yet. It doesn’t look like The Sixty is going to stop going after her, either.

Speaking about her choice to cover for Timothy, King clarified, “We also wanted this pretty picture of the girls in these lovely Dan Lawson school outfits for Rome and Katja in the most beautiful dress ever, thinking, oh, this is the happy ending we want, and they’re going to kick their heels and go off in the sunset and then seeing, no, this child is probably the Antichrist and Kristen’s going to cover for him.”

David

David saw protecting Kristen as what God would want him to do. He admitted his work with The Entity made him stray from his path, which validated where his heart truly lies. David also spoke out against shutting the assessor’s program down, convincing the Vatican to restart it in Rome.

He looked out for his friends till the very end, and Robert King said, “We wanted to have him keep moving up just as we saw Leland, by killing demon after demon, moving up through his Satanic hierarchy; there was some kind of mirroring going on.”

Ben

After figuring out the VR game and how it feeds misery and despair straight into people’s brains, Ben chose to stay home instead of traveling to Rome with the others. He felt settled and in good financial standing at his job.

Leland

Leland was thrown into a sack and stuck inside the demon box Fenna arrived with. It comes down to a fight, and the good guys win this time.

After he set out to find Kristen, they decided death was too kind of a punishment for him. It’s what he deserves!

King added, “We wanted Leland not to be killed in a prosaic pragmatic way, but kind of vanquished in a magical way, fitting with some of the symbolism of the show.”

Do Kristen and David get together in the Evil finale?

Though David confesses he loves Kristen to Ben, he doesn’t leave the priesthood and they do not share a kiss.

But they’re still kind of together if you squint real hard.

Robert and Michelle King certainly saw and understood the chemistry, but the choice ultimately came down to sticking to David’s guns. “His passion for making a decision and sticking to it is just as important in his makeup as having sex with Kristen – especially when you can still have Kristen as his friend,” said Robert.

“The temptation for them both will always be there because you can’t just turn that off when there’s so much heat between them.”

Is Timothy the Antichrist?

There’s no definitive answer to this. It’s left up for debate, and even the show’s creators have different opinions. It’s certainly a possibility though.

“Michelle and I disagree, which is why the show can work both ways, but I think it is the Antichrist, that Lexis, that tale was really her true satanic nature in her and that Kristen has been chosen partly because she would be a good mother to protect this baby as it makes its way to manhood and some demonic Antichrist presence.

“That to me is the punchline at the end of the joke, that we love Kristen, but also is she the mother of the living Antichrist? Did Leland get his way in the end? That’s why it’s really good that Michelle and I both disagreed because then the audience can disagree, too.”
