Lady Bird is arguably the movie that made director Greta Gerwig a household name. Now, it seems she’s open for a sequel.

Lady Bird, the 2017 A24 movie written and directed by Greta Gerwig, has long since remained a favorite among the auteur’s fans. Not only does it have a 99% Critics’ Score on Rotten Tomatoes, it was also nominated for Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards.

Starring Saoirse Ronan, the comedy-drama follows said plot: “A nurse works tirelessly to keep her family afloat after her husband loses his job. She also maintains a turbulent bond with a teenage daughter who is just like her: loving, strong-willed and deeply opinionated.

But while the Sacramento-set movie seemed one-and-done, turns out Gerwig may not be done with the film’s location, or its main character.

Greta Gerwig wants to “revisit” Lady Bird

When asked if she would ever return to Lady Bird at a Barbie screening event, the director responded that “I haven’t thought about it that way, although part of me would love to, because I love Saoirse as an actor, and I love the character.”

As she continued, “I would revisit it. I know I definitely wanna make more films in Sacramento, that’s something I know I wanna do. I have a vague idea for two other ones. So that’s gonna happen. So stay tuned for the Sacramento trilogy.”

As for the return of the movie’s titular star, considering that Saoirse Ronan and Gerwig remained close collaborators after Lady Bird, working together on 2019’s Little Women, it’s easy to imagine that they could reconnect once more for another go at Lady Bird. Especially since Ronan was nominated for Best Actress at the 2018 Oscars for the role.

What could happen in a Lady Bird sequel?

While plot ideas are yet to be discussed – except that Sacramento would likely be involved – some fans have already begun speculating.

As X (formerly Twitter) users reacted to the potential news of a Lady Bird sequel, with some being positive, and some being negative, one fan offered a potential plot by posting:

“I would love to see this because I think lady bird is the kind of girl who leaves her hometown with no intention of ever coming back, and then four years later not only is she back there but she’s also teaching at her high school.”

The original movie ended with Lady Bird starting college in New York, against the wishes of her mother. Lady Bird had always wanted to live in the East Coast, so we can assume that she tried her best to remain there. But also considering her family’s financial struggles throughout the film, and how pricey it is to live in New York, it’s easy to picture her ending up back in her home town.

Plus, no doubt the movie would continue its themes of mother-daughter relationships – perhaps Lady Bird would be a mother herself this time around.

Either way, the prospect of a sequel has stirred up intrigue. Check out some of the reactions to the news below:
