Director Richard Linklater told Deadline about writing the movie with Powell: “It didn’t start off that way. It was like, OK, I’m the writer/director, he’s the actor, let’s make a movie. But we were working on the phone during the pandemic. I’m in my library and he was with his family, or traveling for work. We just talked and talked. At some point, I just said, ‘You know what? We’re already working on this together. I’m going to start sending you pages, and you’re going to send them back to me.’ It felt natural.”
What is Hit Man about?
The official synopsis for the movie reads: “A professor moonlighting as a hit man of sorts for his city police department descends into dangerous, dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to a woman who enlists his services.”
Professional ‘killer’ Gary Johnson (Powell) breaks his work protocol in order to try to help a desperate woman leaving an abusive husband – then finds himself falling for her.
In our four-star review of the movie, we said: “Out of the films that are tackling the thorny genre of thriller in 2023, Hit Man is up there in the ranks.
“Linklater’s latest is a guaranteed good time, packed with unique and empathetic characters and narrative just about original enough to take audiences someplace new. Chances are though, these audiences might forget all about it in a month or two.”
