In the wake of big animated movies such as The Boy and the Heron, Netflix‘s Nimona, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it’s easy to forget about the little guys – but thanks to the Academy Awards, Robot Dreams is now in the public eye.

Its official synopsis reads: “In 1980s New York City, Dog assembles Robot as a companion, and they become best buddies. On a Labor Day outing to Coney Island, Robot’s metal parts rust, and he can’t move.”

Robot Dreams isn’t yet available on streaming.

However, the movie is still available to watch in theaters, which is the same for viewers across the globe. After its release in December 2023, Neon acquired the distribution rights to release in North American territory.

Is Robot Dreams worth watching?

The movie currently has a 100% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an additional audience score of 90%.

Guy Lodge at Variety wrote, “Robot Dreams should build a sufficient following to prove its own message to the lonely and forlorn: when it comes to love, quality trumps quantity.”

Luis Martínez at El Mundo added, “Pablo Berger insists on his idea of ​​silent cinema to, through animation, create a strange and, at the same time, an extraordinarily close miracle.”

Tomris Laffly at The Wrap agreed, “Bolstered by the resilient spirit of New York City, this is one of the loveliest movies that you will see this year, animated or otherwise.”

Brian Orndorf at Blu-ray.com concluded, “It’s an odd endeavor, but it remains emotionally engaging and superbly animated, with a sharp sense of character movement and location.”
