We knew House of the Dragon Season 2 was due to premiere in Summer 2024 – but thanks to Matt Smith, we may know which month it’ll arrive.

The Game of Thrones prequel is an adaptation of Fire and Blood, George R.R. Martin’s epic novel chronicling the infamous Targaryen civil war that brought a once-impenetrable Westeros dynasty to its knees. It was known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Many were skeptical about the show’s prospects, given the disastrous ending of its once-mighty predecessor just three years prior. However, not only did it fetch historic viewership figures for HBO, but the show garnered extraordinary acclaim and went on to win two Golden Globes and earn several Emmy nominations.

It will return with its second season later this year, and Smith has just narrowed the release window.

According to Smith, House of the Dragon Season 2 will premiere in August 2024.

In a recent interview with Zoe Ball on BBC Radio 2, he was asked when fans can expect the show to come back. “August, I think… this summer, yeah. I’ve not seen any of it yet, but we finished last year. So we’ve gotta do all the ADR and all that business.”

Smith also described the reception to the first season as a “relief… you sort of try to make things in your own identity, I suppose. It was a relief that people seemingly enjoyed it. Fingers crossed, we gotta keep going – you never know.”

Whenever Season 2 does arrive, don’t expect it to be a cheery affair: going by the first teaser trailer, fans should prepare themselves for an incident akin to the trauma of the Red Wedding.

Martin caught a sneak preview of the opening episodes, and in his eyes, they’re “great… and they are not even finished yet. Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry. (I did not cry myself, but one of my friends did). Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart-rending. Just the sort of thing I like.”

HBO has yet to confirm an exact release date, but you can find out everything else we know about House of the Dragon Season 2 here.
