Is Past Lives worth watching?
According to Rotten Tomatoes, Past Lives has a 96% rating on the Tomatometer, with an additional audience score of 84%.
In our five-star review, we wrote: “Featuring minimal yet profound dialogue, grounded performances and a clever subversion of romantic drama cliches, Past Lives is an authentic and realistic look at the ties that bind us as humans and how these connections can shape the trajectory of our lives.”
Mark Kermode at The Observer agreed: “Plaudits to the principal cast, who do a miraculous job of portraying inner conflict and ecstasy with the merest tilt of a head, or subtle shift of a shoulder.”
Kevin A. Ranson at MovieCrypt.com added: “With all the trappings of a romantic love triangle, the narrative skews toward the less-explored drama: how do we move forward from here? With aspects to cheer for & fear for in each character, this personal production believably bleeds angst & regret…”
Scott Phillips at Forbes concluded: “Past Lives is astute and sharply-observed, emotional without being sentimental. It has lived rent-free in my mind since I saw it six months ago. It’s not to be missed.”
