Horror fans hail new spider movie as their “worst nightmare”
ShudderThe trailer for a new spider movie just dropped ahead of its US release. And it’s safe to say, it’s all kinds of nope, with horror fans describing it as their “worst nightmare.”
Given arachnophobia is widely considered to be the most common fear across the globe, it’s surprising there haven’t been more spider-themed horror movies over the years.
There are a few notable entries, of course, one being Ellory Elkayem’s 2002 b-movie monster comedy Eight-Legged Freaks. And then there’s Frank Marshal’s 1990 hit Arachnophobia, which perfectly blends horror and humor.
But in 2024, a new spider flick is set to make its US debut, and it may just revolutionize the subgenre, if the reactions to the new trailer are anything to go by…
Horror fans hail new spider movie as their “worst nightmare”
Ahead of its US release, Shudder just dropped the trailer for Infested – originally titled Vermines – a spider movie helmed by Sebastien Vanicek. And horror fans are hyped, even though it may be their “worst nightmare.”
As per the synopsis, the creature feature centers on Kaleb, who “is about to turn 30 and has never been lonelier. He’s fighting with his sister over a matter of inheritance and has cut ties with his best friend.
“Fascinated by exotic animals, he finds a venomous spider in a bazaar and brings it back to his flat. It only takes a moment for it to escape and reproduce, turning the whole place into a dreadful web trap.”
In other words, it sounds like pure nightmare fuel, and it looks like it too, with the trailer showing close up shots of very real, very terrifying arachnids, including a horrifying bathroom scene of them crawling out from a plug hole.
Fans are all in agreement that they are 1) terrified of spiders and 2) definitely going to give Infested a watch. “I hate spiders, but let’s watch this thing,” wrote one on X, while another said, “Down for a good creepy crawlie flick like this. Been a while since I’ve been properly icked.”
Over on YouTube, a third added, “Now THIS is a spider movie!” And a fourth chimed in, “I hate it. Can’t wait.” And one person who’s already seen the movie commented, “Arachnophobes beware, this movie may be your worst nightmare come to life.”
According to Bloody Disgusting, Vanicek impressed the horror community so much with the film, it landed him the gig of helming the next Evil Dead spinoff.
If you think you can stomach it, Infested drops on Shudder on April 26. Until then, check out our list of the 30 best horror movies of all time, and head here for all of the new movies hitting streaming in March.
