James Cameron admits one thing will stop him from Avatar 6 and 7
20th Century StudiosJames Cameron is the king of the movie world – but even he’s admitted there’s a chance he won’t be able to direct Avatar 6 and 7.
Avatar: The Way of Water was a billion-busting, spectacular rebuttal to people’s (correction: fools) claims that the first movie had no cultural impact. Perhaps one day everyone will learn: Cameron does not miss.
The filmmaker is going full steam ahead on Pandora, with three more movies green-lit and set to hit the biggest screens you can find over the coming decade.
That’s not all: Cameron already has ideas for where the franchise could go after the fifth movie – but, sadly, it looks like he may allow someone else to sit in the director’s chair.
James Cameron teases Avatar 6 and 7
Speaking to People at the Saturn Awards, Cameron gave a status report on Avatar 5 – and teased two more movies.
“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” he explained.
“I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”
Cameron already spoke about his hopes for sixth and seventh entries, if the world wants them. “I’d be 89 by then. Obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this.”
In that interview, he said he “may have five or six more movies in him and that three of them, probably, would be Avatar movies” – so if you’re holding out for True Lies 2, keep those fingers crossed.
