It’s time to put on a happy face, as Todd Phillips, the director for Joker 2 – officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux – has confirmed that the first trailer is dropping soon.

Superhero fatigue has been dominating the genre of late. 2023 was the worst year for the MCU, with the likes of The Marvels, Ant-Man 3, and Secret Invasion all performing poorly and leaving fans wondering whether there’s space for the franchise in its post-Endgame era.

This year isn’t shaping up to be much better – while Deadpool 3 looks fantastic, it’s the MCU’s only movie releasing in 2024. Then there’s Sony’s Madame Web, a film so bad, one review said it “makes Morbius look like The Dark Knight.”

But that’s not to say superhero content is dead. Invincible returned to our screens last year, proving once again why it’s the best superhero TV show. The hype for The Boys making its bone-crunching return is going strong. And the much-awaited Joker sequel is anticipated to be one of the best movies of the year.

Joker 2 director confirms first trailer is dropping soon

Todd Phillips took to Instagram to share a new look at Joker 2 with a series of images, and he also confirmed the first trailer will drop in mid-April.

In the post, the director shared three stunning images from the DC adaptation, showing Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck alongside Lady Gaga in her debut as Harley Quinn. Alongside the stills, he wrote: “Hoping your day is full of love. 10.4.24.”

While fans are hyped, there are numerous calls for Phillips to drop the trailer. In response to one asking when it’ll arrive, he said: “Been getting this question a lot. The movie comes out in October. So our first teaser won’t be out until mid-April.”

Amid the news, one fan wrote on X, “April please come sooner.” “Again it’s going to rule on cinemas,” said another, while a third added, “I actually can’t wait.”

It’s no surprise excitement is building – Phillips’ first Joker transcends the superhero genre, standing as a character study and psychological thriller that is as thought-provoking as it is unsettling.

The success of the 2019 movie demonstrated that audiences are hungry for bold and unconventional storytelling, even within the confines of established comic book lore. And the winning streak looks set to continue with Joker: Folie à Deux.

As well as focusing on the Joker/Harley relationship, the sequel was originally believed to be a musical – which would make sense given Gaga’s experience in this realm. However, cinematographer Lawrence Sher shut down the theory, stating: “It just has music in it, that’s all. Music is a part of the movie and the characters, but I don’t know if it’s a musical.”
