The writer of Lisa Frankenstein has gone on the record to state that the comedy-horror takes place in the same universe as a cult classic from 2009.

Lisa Frankenstein is a very modern take on Mary Shelley’s classic gothic horror. The movie stars Kathryn Newton as a High School goth who reanimates a handsome corpse – played by Cole Sprouse – and sets about turning him into the man of her dreams. All while going on a blackly comic killing spree.

Zelda Williams directs, and recently said the film is inspired by the likes of Edward Scissorhands, Death Becomes Her, and Day of the Dead.

Meanwhile, Diablo Cody is on writing duties, and recently confirmed that the movie is linked to one of her previous films.

While speaking at the Lisa Frankenstein premiere, writer Diablo Cody was asked if the movie connects to Jennifer’s Body, to which she responded: “I am just declaring that this movie takes place in the same universe. I have decided that. I will not say that you’d see any overt references to that but I’m saying it.”

Released in 2009, Jennifer’s Body stars Megan Fox as a High School cheerleader who turns into a succubus specialising in killing her male classmates. While Amanda Seyfried plays the friend who tries to save her/them.

Karyn Kusama directed, and while it didn’t exactly set the box office alight, a cult has built around Jennifer’s Body in the intervening years, with fans hoping for a sequel or reboot. And that might actually materialise, as when asked about the latter during the same red-carpet interview, Cody said that she hopes Lisa Frankenstein will give her the “final push that I need to actually make it happen. It’s hard to get things made these days.”

Lisa Frankenstein opens this Friday, February 9, 2024.
