What is Mea Culpa about? Netflix movie explained
NetflixWhat in the Destiny’s Child is going on with Mea Culpa? Here’s everything you need to know about the new Netflix movie, explained in full.
Not to be confused with the 2014 movie of the same name, new film Mea Culpa is about to make its way to Netflix later this year.
Following on from the likes of Griselda and Fool Me Once, the movie is set to be another exciting addition to the streaming platform’s already stacked annual slate.
With new teasers for the movie now being released, here’s everything you need to know about Netflix’s Mea Culpa, explained in full.
What is Mea Culpa about?
The movie’s official synopsis reads: “When criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland) takes on the murder case of artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), the truth isn’t as obvious as it seems. While she tries to determine the innocence or guilt of her cagy-yet-seductive client, it is uncovered that everyone is guilty of something. Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa explores what happens when burning desire takes hold and things get hot… and dangerous.”
Perry told Tudum: “This idea came to me because I love all of those older thrillers from the ’80s and ’90s. It was fun to explore the best and worst of humanity through the genre of an exotic thriller.”
Principal photography for the film started on March 6, 2023, in Atlanta at the Tyler Perry Studios. A few days on location in Chicago followed, with production later wrapping on March 26.

Perry had nothing but praise for Rowland. “I never had an experience where I was working with someone who had so many great ideas to bring to the table. As a producer, she was fantastic.”
Rowland added: “It was just so easy to work with him and if there was ever any moment where he was uncertain about something, he would say, ‘Well, let’s discuss it and then let’s try it.’ But it was all about communicating.”
