Mortal Kombat 2 producer teases major villain in sequel
Warner Bros.Producer Todd Garner seemingly just confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2 will feature one of the video game’s most iconic villains.
Garner has fanned the flames of fans’ excitement for the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat in recent months via a series of cryptic set photos.
The producer’s more notable behind-the-scenes snaps include partial views of two legendary Mortal Kombat weapons: Shao Kahn’s war hammer and one of Kitana’s blade-tipped fans
Garner also sparked a flurry of speculation with an image of a rough stone floor bathed in red light, which many believe points to the hellish Netherrealm’s inclusion in Mortal Kombat 2.

Garner has arguably outdone himself with his latest Mortal Kombat 2 pic of a pale, grey hand protruding from a black sleeve. This pasty paw seemingly belongs to Quan Chi – the baddie previous reports indicate will be portrayed by Damon Herriman.
In the Mortal Kombat video games, Quan Chi is a devious sorcerer who plagues the heroes of Earthrealm. He makes his first, non-playable appearance in spinoff title Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, before making his “proper” debut in Mortal Kombat 4. He’s since appeared in several further franchise entries, including 2023’s Mortal Kombat 1.
While Garner’s post doesn’t explicitly announce Quan Chi’s inclusion in Mortal Kombat 2, many franchise devotees responded as if it did. “Quan Chi for sure,” asserted one X user. “Freaking Quan Chi is in the movie,” enthused another. “And [in] the first movie I thought he was framing Bi-Han for killing Hanzo’s family.” “Quan Chi up to his old schemes again,” quipped a third.
That said, some fans weren’t convinced Garner’s photo depicted Quan Chi. Instead, this segment of the fanbase believes the mystery hand belongs to another Mortal Kombat 2 villain, Noob Saibot.
Mortal Kombat 2 adds Johnny Cage to its roster
Regardless of whose hand is pictured, it’s almost certainly bad news for Earthrealm. Fortunately, protagonist Cole Young is set to bolster his side’s ranks with several new warriors in Mortal Kombat 2. This includes Johnny Cage, who was notably absent from the 2021 flick.
The Boys’ Karl Urban is officially on board as Cage, following persistent buzz that he was in talks to star. It’s unclear at this stage how closely Urban’s Cage will emulate his pixel-powered counterpart. The first Mortal Kombat film’s finale suggests Johnny’s original Hollywood backstory remains intact, though.
