New Sherlock Holmes TV show with “awful” twist divides fans
Warner Bros. PicturesThe infamous Sherlock Holmes is getting another on-screen adaptation, but this time the TV series has fans divided on whether it’s a good idea.
There have been a few iterations of the famous British detective over the years, and many played by superheroes. Robert Downey Jr. played the role in the 2009 two-movie franchise, with Henry Cavill playing the role as a supporting character in Netflix’s Enola Holmes.
It’s also hard to forget Benedict Cumberbatch playing the detective in the hit BBC series Sherlock. Johnny Lee Miller also played the role in Elementary. This time, The CW has taken the reigns to create a new series with Fargo star David Thewlis titled Sherlock & Daughter.
But news of the series storyline has split fans between loving the idea and hating it, as it will focus on Sherlock Holmes’s daughter.
New Sherlock Holmes series will include his daughter
As the brilliant detective is thwarted by a case, a young girl from America deals with the murder of her mother. She learns her absent father may be Sherlock Holmes.
According to Deadline, the storyline reads, “The mystery thriller puts Sherlock Holmes (Thewlis) out of his comfort zone, mysteriously unable to investigate a sinister case without risking the lives of his closest friends. Enter young American Amelia (Blu Hunt, The Originals). After her mother’s mysterious murder, she learns that her missing father might be the legendary detective.”
The two will tackle a global conspiracy while also uncovering clues for the murder of Amelia’s mother. At the heart of the series is also the truth behind whether she really is the daughter of the famous detective.
Sherlock & Daughter is the first time Sherlock’s daughter has been introduced on the small screen. Previous iterations have focused on the detective’s unique antics for solving crime, and Netflix’s Enola Holmes focused on Sherlock’s younger sister.
Fans on Reddit are not too pleased with the news, with one commenting, “This sounds awful. Holmes is such a great character that can be riffed on in any number of ways but every recent iteration seems more keen in adding family members and making them the focus. No thanks.”
Another fan predicted the outcome of the storyline due to its similarity to another series. “Did someone watch Monsieur Spade and figure they should do the exact same thing with Sherlock Holmes? Spoiler: Her mum is going to be Irene Adler,” explained the fan.
Others disliked the idea of how Sherlock Holmes had a daughter. One fan said, “I don’t like thinking about Sherlock Holmes having sex, and I really don’t like it if he looks like David Thewlis.”
One theory on Reddit suggests that the daughter could be from Mycroft and Sherlock’s other brother. Details of Sherlock & Daughter are still in its early stages with only Thewlis and Hunt cast in the leading roles.
