One Piece already dethroned on Netflix by controversial special
NetflixOne Piece, the hit live-action anime series, jumped straight to the summit of the Netflix top 10 chart – but it’s already been knocked off by a new comedy special.
It’s been quite a week for One Piece fans. After years of development and anxieties over whether it’d even work, Eiichiro Oda’s legendary anime and manga franchise has managed to pull off a live-action series – check out our four-star review here.
Its viewing numbers have been formidable out of the gate, reaching the top of the streamer’s chart in 84 countries – setting a new record and beating the likes of Stranger Things and Wednesday – with over 140 million hours viewed within its first four days of release.
Yet, it’s not been enough to keep it at number one on Netflix, with a controversial comedy special hitting the top spot in a single day.
One Piece dethroned on Netflix by Shane Gillis comedy special
Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs, a new comedy special, has reached number one on Netflix’s chart and shoved One Piece down to second.
Gillis’ show follows his self-uploaded Live in Austin special in 2021, which racked up more than 14 million views. He’s since made appearances on Joe Rogan’s podcast, as well as starring alongside Pete Davidson in Bupkis.
However, he’s also a controversial figure, having been sacked from Saturday Night Live after clips of the comic using racist, sexist, and homophobic language on a past podcast resurfaced online. According to Gillis, SNL attempted to keep him on the show despite the backlash.
Appearing on an episode of Bussin’ With The Boys, he said: “It was a bad joke. I’m not saying I shouldn’t have been fired. It all blew up… it was number one on Twitter for like three days… I had a feeling, I knew it was coming the second that I got in trouble. I understood the rules, but why do we have those rules?”
Meanwhile, One Piece hasn’t been the subject of any controversy: it has earned widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike.
