One Piece just proved Gear 5 is not Luffy’s peak
CrunchyrollIt hasn’t been long since Luffy’s Gear 5 shook the entire One Piece fandom. However, the series just revealed that it’s not Luffy’s peak.
Whether it was in the manga or in the anime, the sudden transformation of One Piece protagonist took the internet by storm. Just when all odds seem against him, Luffy suddenly transforms into a mythical being using the strange abilities of his devil fruit.
He overpowers the King of the Beasts and brings peace to Wano, freeing the people who were tormented for two decades. Moments after his transformation, Luffy declares Gear 5 is his peak. He is delirious and laughing uncontrollably.
However, the power he demonstrates in the fight is nothing to scoff at. Nonetheless, there is one enemy against whom even Luffy’s peak form is no match. Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Egghead arc of the manga!
Why Gear 5 isn’t Luffy’s peak in One Piece
One Piece Chapter 1109 debuts Luffy’s new Gear 5 technique, Gum-Gum Dawn Cymbal. Luffy claps his giant hands together with his opponent in between, turning them into a flat disk that can be flung. He uses it against Kizaru and Saturn.
However, none of Luffy’s techniques are working against the elder. No matter what attack he throws at Saturn, the latter recovers almost instantly without showing any signs of injuries. Luffy is the main protagonist of the series, and Saturn is surely not the main villain. Although the elder has a few tricks up his sleeve, Luffy is clearly facing trouble against him.
Hence, if Gear 5 is actually Luffy’s peak, he wouldn’t be struggling so much to defeat Saturn. The story is in its Final Saga and will conclude in a few years. During that time, Luffy will face enemies far more dangerous and powerful than Saturn. Hence, if he cannot even defeat Saturn using all his Gear 5 abilities, then there’s no way he can overpower enemies like Blackbeard or Imu.
No doubt, Luffy is incredibly powerful, but Gear 5 is only enough to defeat villains like Kaido and Kizaru. At this point, it’s unclear if the series will feature Gear 6. At the very least, the series should introduce new sub-forms of Gear 5, just like there are in Gear 4.
However, it’s certain that Luffy will become more powerful in the future. The peak that he is talking about in the Wano Saga would likely seem like the weaker version of himself by the time the story ends.
