Biggest snubs from the 2024 Oscar nominations
Warner Bros./Unsplash/Prime VideoWith the Academy Awards ceremony coming up, here are all the biggest snubs from the 2024 Oscar nominations.
Every year, the biggest names in Hollywood put on their gladrags and head to the red carpet of the Dolby Theatre in LA in the hopes of winning one of those iconic golden statues. We are, of course, talking about the Oscars.
2023’s ceremony was quite the event, highlights including Everything Everywhere All at Once dominating the acting categories, while Brendan Fraser finally won an Academy Award for his impeccable performance in The Whale.
But even a nomination can be credit enough – and the snubs can be stingers. Ahead of the ceremony, the 2024 Oscar nominations are being announced today (January 23), so here are the movies, stars, writers, and directors that didn’t get nominated.
Biggest snubs from the 2024 Oscar nominations
Below, you will find a list of all the biggest snubs from the 2024 Oscar nominations across various categories…
Leonardo DiCaprio – Best Actor
It famously took a long time before Leonardo DiCaprio bagged his first Oscar, and he may be waiting a while for a second, as he wasn’t nominated for Best Actor for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon. The nominations for this category include: Bradley Cooper in Maestro; Colman Domingo in Rustin; Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers; Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer; and Jeffrey Wright in American Fiction.
Margot Robbie – Best Actress
She might have painted the town pink when she debuted as Barbie, but Margot Robbie has been snubbed by the 2024 Oscars, having not been included in the Best Actress nominations. She lost out to Nyad’s Annette Bening, Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone, Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller, Maestro’s Carey Milligan, and Poor Things’ Emma Stone.
Greta Gerwig – Best Director
If you’re a Barbie lover, you might be disappointed to find out that Greta Gerwig hasn’t been nominated for the Best Director Academy Award. Those who are in the running are: Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall; Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon; Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer; Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things; and Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest.
The Color Purple – Best Picture
In fact, Blitz Bazawule’s The Color Purple remake has only received one 2024 Oscar nomination at the time of writing, despite receiving positive reviews and updating a well-known story with important themes. The ten nominees announced are American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.
Saltburn – Best Original Screenplay
Although Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has been nothing short of a global phenomenon, especially after its Amazon Prime release, she failed to receive a nomination for the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award. Instead, the nominees are: Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet Arthur Harari; The Holdovers by Alexander Payne; Maestro by Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer; Past Lives by Celine Song; and May December by Samy Burch.
Killers of the Flower Moon – Best Original Screenplay
Martin Scorsese’s work might be perfect Oscars fodder, but his epic Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon failed to bag a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Scorsese co-wrote the script with Eric Roth, based on the 2017 non-fiction book of the same name by David Grann.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – Best Animated Feature
While Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem earned a decent 95% on Rotten Tomatoes when it dropped last year, it didn’t make the cut when it came to the Oscar 2024 nominations. Instead, The Boy and the Heron, Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will all compete for the coveted award.
Charles Melton – Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Charles Melton received widespread acclaim for his role as Joe Yoo in May December, but he failed to land a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Those in the running include: Sterling K. Brown in American Fiction; Robert De Niro in Killers of the Flower Moon; Robert Downey Jr. in Oppenheimer; Ryan Gosling in Barbie; and Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things.
Penélope Cruz – Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Similarly, Penélope Cruz was snubbed for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Laura Ferrari in Michael Mann’s Ferrari. Those who will be contending at the ceremony are Emily Blunt for Oppenheimer, Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple, America Ferrera for Barbie, Jodie Foster for Nyad, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers.
Dua Lipa – Best Original Song
Alas, one of Barbie’s many stings is the fact that Dua Lipa’s bop ‘Dance the Night’ didn’t make it as a nominee for Best Original Song. That being said, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s Barbie track ‘I’m Just Ken’ did get a nomination, as did Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s ‘What Was I Made For?’. Others include ‘The Fire Inside’ for Flamin’ Hot, ‘It Never Went Away’ for American Symphony, and ‘Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)’ for Killers of the Flower Moon.
