A still of Paddington

Paddington is back but is now heading to Peru, with the third installment of the classic film franchise confirmed to be on the way.

The first two films in the Paddington franchise are considered hit family films, with Paddington 2 being considered one of the best films ever by Rotten Tomatoes. And now, after years of wishful thinking, Studio Canal and Heyday Films have announced that Paddington 3 is finally coming!

So here’s everything we know about the upcoming threequel, aptly titled Paddington in Peru.

Paddington in Peru release date

Paddington 3 will be released in North America on January 17, 2025, and in the U.K. on November 8, 2024.

In April 2023, it was reported that Paddington in Peru would go into production on July 24 of that year, giving an initial indication that the movie would come out sometime in 2024. As the first two Paddington movies were released in November 2014 and November 2017, sticking to a November release schedule was to be expected.

Paddington 3 cast: Who is starring in the movie?

Many of the major Paddington players are likely to be back. Currently, the cast list includes but is not limited to:

  • Ben Whishaw as Paddington
  • Emily Mortimer as Mrs Brown
  • Hugh Bonneville as Mr Brown
  • Julie Walters as Mrs Bird
  • Madeleine Harris as Judy Brown
  • Samuel Joslin as Jonathan Brown
  • Olivia Colman as Reverend mother
  • Antonio Banderas as Hunter Cabot
  • Rachel Zegler as Gina
  • Amit Shah as Zayden
  • Jim Broadbent as Mr Gruber

One big casting loss is Sally Hawkins as Mrs Brown. The actor has stepped back from the role and been replaced by Emily Mortimer.

“For me it has felt the right time to hand the reins over to another, and one can’t get much better than the truly wonderful Emily Mortimer, she is extraordinarily special,” said Hawkins to Variety.

“She will embody the essence of Mary Brown and yet make it utterly her own. However, I am, and will always be in love with Paddington’s world. I already greatly miss my on and off-screen family – the experience of making the first two films has truly been some of the best and most creative times I have had in the world of film.”

As for currently non-confirmed but expected roles, Imelda Staunton and Michael Gambon will likely both be back to voice Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo. The residents of Windsor Gardens may make an appearance too, including Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ben Miller, Jessica Hynes, and Peter Capaldi.

There’s a chance for Jim Broadbent to reprise his role in Mr Gruber’s antique shop, along with Tobago and d’Lime, the musical act who have appeared in both Paddington films so far.

Regarding behind the camera, Dougal Wilson is taking over as director from Paul King. King is still involved, having executive produced and written the story alongside Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton. Burton also wrote the screenplay, along with Jon Foster and James Lamont.

“After ten years of working on the Paddington movies, I feel absurdly protective of the little bear, and I’m delighted that Dougal will be there to hold his paw as he embarks on his third big-screen adventure,” King said in an official statement.

Paddington 3 plot: What will the movie be about?

Right now there is no official synopsis for Paddington in Peru, but as we can guess from the title, the movie will follow the titular bear as he heads to Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy at a home for retired bears.

The Browns will join Paddington on his journey, which will lead them on an “unexpected” voyage through the Amazon rainforest and up the mountains of Peru.

There will no doubt be plenty of hijinks involved and some nefarious figures attempting to get in the way. Plots such as kidnapping or theft are a possibility, as they have been in previous movies.

But ultimately, the film is sure to be a heart-warming affair, and we can’t wait to find out what happens.

We will update this article when new information drops.
