Rogue One cinematographer reflects on “iconic” Darth Vader scene
DisneyThe cinematographer for the Star Wars film Rogue One looked back on filming the movie’s iconic scene with Darth Vader.
It may be hard to believe, but it’s been seven years since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered on the big screen.
The movie was set up to be a prequel to the original Star Wars trilogy. It followed Jyn Erso as she helped the Rebel Alliance steal the plans to the Death Star.
Though fans knew how Rogue One would end given the beginning of A New Hope, the movie did deliver an exciting scene with the franchise’s big bad, Darth Vader. And Rogue One’s cinematographer has recently looked back on the sequence.
Rogue One held an iconic Darth Vader scene in its finale
Rogue One’s cinematographer Greig Fraser recently sat down with Variety to discuss his upcoming sci-film The Creator. While reflecting on his favorite shots of his career, Fraser talked about the process in which the Rogue One crew came to film the finale with its iconic Darth Vader cameo.
The ending was actually shot three months before the movie premiered. Additionally, it was changed from what it originally was supposed to be.
The ending scene with Darth Vader shows the Sith lord boarding the Rebel command ship and killing many troops, but Princess Leia Organa manages to escape with the Death Star schematics.
“I was about to start on ‘Mary Magdalene’ with Garth Davis’ and I got a call about a new ending. I went, ‘Are you kidding? But, I have to say, we shot a great ending,” Fraser explained, “I was so enamored to be privy to that scene.
Fraser went on to say, “There are some things that I’ve been able to do visually, and that was cool. I got to take an iconic character and put him into an iconic situation and create that.
To be able to lens that, I think is an essential Darth Vader scene in the entire canon, not just for the film. It’s a very important moment for that character. To get to properly record his venom was cool.”
