Severance fans divided by “Chekhov’s finger traps”
On the Severance subreddit, one user pointed out how Dylan’s stash of finger traps could have been used in the big Season 1 finale.
“I was so sure he was going to have to use his wealth of finger traps to somehow extend his reach,” wrote ItWasTheMiddleOne. “The writers liked to sprinkle in extremely silly details in otherwise extremely tense scenes, so I was 1000% expecting Chekov’s finger traps to factor in.”
The finger traps in Severance are quite significant, especially for Dylan. Lumon Industries offers them as incentives for completing the work, and Dylan is a little obsessed with earning them, even having a large collection on his desk.
In a show where the details matter, it’s not surprising that fans might have expected these props to play a major part, especially in the finale. In the final episode of Season 1, Dylan enacts the Overtime Contingency Protocol that will allow the others to go into their ‘Outies’ worlds temporarily. To do this, he has to hold down two switches. Naturally, this is where the finger traps could have been a big help.
That said, not all fans were in agreement about the significance of the traps.
“I always just took the finger traps as a symbolic representation of how you break free from severance — the two sides have to be brought together, the more they pull apart, the more stuck you are,” said huxiblejones.
“Ok, you know they’re made from paper, right?” said spaetzele.
Whether viewers thought the finger traps were a key element or not, Dylan still managed to flip the switches without them, giving viewers that incredible finale. And now that Severance Season 2‘s on the way, there’s no reason for them not to make a return…
