Starship Troopers was dismissed by critics in 1997, with many believing it actually endorsed and glorified the fascist ideologies it was satirizing. That couldn’t be further from the truth, with Verhoeven asking his writer, Ed Neumeier, to summarize the “right-wing book” upon which it’s based, because it was “so boring.”
Helldivers 2 has rightly drawn comparisons to the film and inspired many to check it out for the first time. “Starship Troopers is the best anti-fascist cautionary tale (disguised as a big dumb action film) propaganda parody ever made and I’m damn happy Helldivers has given it a whole new life,” one user wrote.
“Of course inspired by Helldivers 2, I watched Starship Troopers for the first time I thought this was going be stupid but it’s actually so good,” another tweeted.
