The Bear’s awards sweep sparks divide over one “disrespectful” thing
FX / HuluThe Bear’s sweep of the awards at the Emmys has outraged some viewers, who have demanded the “intense” show should be classed as a drama, instead of a comedy series.
The Bear has swept the awards season so far, following three huge wins at the Golden Globes and then taking home a staggering 10 awards at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Most notably at the Emmys, it picked up the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, where it also dominated the whole comedy category. This included Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, all winning big for their starring roles.
However, The Bear’s awards sweep was soon hit with controversy. It divided the internet after many believed the show’s drama-filled intensity made it “disrespectful” to other nominees to be classed as a comedy series.
The Bear sparks divide over comedy sweep
As more wins flooded through on January 15, 2024, during the Emmy’s, fans surged through to praise “the most deserving show.” But, it soon turned sour, as legions of viewers slammed the show for winning as a comedy, instead of a drama.
“Nothing against The Bear but as we’ve all said the show is not a comedy, for them to be winning these awards is disrespecting all the shows nominated that deserve to be in the comedy categories. This is the Emmys, I just don’t understand what is happening to these award shows,” a viewer expressed.
Many echoed the same thoughts, asking: “Where are the laughs?” As various users pointed out that the show predominatly focuses around a realistic story that surrounds keeping Carmy’s brother’s struggling restaurant afloat, which in-turn constantly spawns a rollercoaster of emotions and high-drama events.
Instead, others deemed various opposing nominees more suitable to win. This included Ted Lasso and Better Call Saul, which both ended with their final seasons, as well as Abbott Elementary, which were claimed to have been wrongfully snubbed.
When interviewed post-win, Jeremy Allen White replied: “Yes!” when asked if it was a comedy show, as executive producer, Josh Senior, also responded: “I think the show is true to life. Sometimes it’s funny, and sometimes it’s real. What we try to do is tell a real story.” Further stating that the reason it was able to be classed as a comedy, was down to its episodes being around half an hour long.
The Bear has been officially renewed for Season 3, as it looks to set to continue its critical acclaim domination and pickup just where it left off.
