With The Chosen grossing millions of dollars at the box office, fans have just discovered how many seasons of the hit series are in the pipeline.

In 2017, Dallas Jenkins filmed The Shepherd, a humble pilot that became the proof-of-concept for a multi-season show about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ across Judea and Galilea.

Angel Studios, a faith-based entertainment titan after Sound of Freedom and other hit films, took interest in the series and turned to crowdfunding to make it possible. With $11 million in contributions, it became the biggest audience-funded project in TV history.

Five years after its launch, Season 4 has been enjoying an incredible theatrical run, with its final episodes due in the coming weeks. But if you think we’re nearing the end of the story, you’re wrong.

The Chosen is planned to be seven seasons long.

While Jenkins earlier said that Season 4 would be the “most emotionally challenging season” to date, the series is steadily building toward the passion — and that “devastating” arc is still two seasons away at least.

“We’re getting closer and closer to what we know is coming. There’s some extreme pain and sadness that’s coming soon in future seasons,” he told Fox News.

He also told Deadline: “We knew how this would end. We thinking the seventh season now. I just finished the writing season five because we know where the story goes and allows us the freedom to play within those boundaries. So yeah, we do have this plotted out, just not all of the scripts are written just yet.”

Fans took to Reddit to speculate about the trajectory of Jesus’ story in future seasons. “From what I gather, Season 6 is going to be crucifixion/resurrection and Season 7’s going to be post-resurrection,” one wrote.

“I don’t know. But I really hope they don’t end a season with the crucifixion and make us wait a whole year to see the resurrection. Unfortunately, the pattern of increasing drama and cliffhangers makes me think this is likely,” another commented.

Jenkins has already confirmed that the crucifixion will take place in Season 6, with his resurrection unfolding in the seventh and final season.
