Fans already divided over Anne Hathaway’s “wildly unserious” new movie trailer
Amazon Prime VideoAnne Hathaway’s new rom-com just got a trailer, and fans are already split on whether The Idea of You will be a masterpiece or a cringe-fest.
While Anne Hathaway is having a cultural revival, her newest movie might be attracting a different sort of attention. The Idea of You is based on a 2017 book of the same name, and stars Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, following the romance between a middle-aged mother and a world-famous young pop star.
The idea of a celebrity and “normie” falling in love isn’t new in the rom-com world (Notting Hill, they’ll never be you), but the newly-released trailer for The Idea of You has fans latching their claws onto the movie as if they’ve never encountered such a concept.
While some reactions towards the trailer have been harsher than others, one thing’s for sure: everyone has a different opinion on what The Idea of You will turn out to be.
The Idea of You trailer called “wildly unserious” by fans online
The trailer for The Idea of You dropped on March 6, and fans quickly became divided over whether the film has potential. You can watch the trailer for yourself below:
Over on X, those who’ve watched it (likely multiple times) are already taking sides. Another step towards a new rom-com wave? A so-bad-it’s-good cringe-fest? A genuinely enjoyable romp? According to fans, there’s no clear-cut answer.
Many were quick to criticize, with some comments saying: “What are we doing to our finest actresses? I’m tired of every new attempted rom-com looking like this.”
Others also addressed the casting of Anne Hathaway, saying: “Anne Hathaway you got an Oscar on your shelf, like why is she applying to McDonald’s with a Harvard degree?” and: “Annie you have an Oscar, you don’t need to keep doing this.”
“Rom-com renaissance took twelve steps back,” another user suggested.
“Is the acclaimed novel in the room with us?” one user asked. The dragging of the “acclaimed novel” blurb came up frequently, likely referring to the misconception that The Idea of You book was originally Harry Styles fanfiction.
However, others seemed to relish in the idea of the movie. Although nobody has outright stated that it looks good, there are plenty who seem to think it’ll be worth the watch anyway.
“A wildly unserious film, I will be seated,” one comment said. Another followed a similar thought, writing: “This Lifetime Movie a** trailer, I will be there seated on premiere day.”
“REAL movies are BACK,” one user even declared.
The Idea of You will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 2, 2024.
