One of 2023’s most under-appreciated movies is on digital now
A242023 was a year full of under-appreciated movies, with one of the biggest becoming available to watch digitally. Here’s what you need to know.
Even before the usual yearly discourse of certain films being left out of awards season, it was pretty clear to many movielovers that 2023 films were frequently flying under the radar.
From All of Us Strangers to the debate surrounding Margot Robbie for Best Actress, few can seem to agree on which movies are actually worthy of their nominations.
Amidst all the noise, one devastating movie was completely overlooked, but is now finally getting its digital release.
One of 2023’s most under-appreciated movies is on digital now
The Iron Claw, widely considered by fans to be one of the most under-appreciated movies released in 2023, is now available on digital.
An A24 release directed by Sean Durkin, the movie follows the true story of the Von Erich family, considered to be the Texan titans of wrestling in the 1980s. The film stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Lily James as the leading names in its cast.
Though it wasn’t nominated for a single award across the entire season, fans have been quick to share their appreciation of the movie since its U.S. release back in November 2023.
In our four-star review, we described the movie as: “Take a deep breath and fully give yourself to the Von Erich story, because The Iron Claw isn’t one to be missed. Bereft with one saddening act after another, the movie is close to becoming too much to handle — but coming out the other side makes viewers all the more enriched for the experience.”
The Iron Claw currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 89%, with an audience score of 94%.
Clarisse Loughrey at The Independent commented on the movie: “Efron, White, Dickinson and Simons render grief in all its shades. But it’s Efron, his outrageously muscled body made beatific with a Joan of Arc bowl cut, who softens the film’s harder knocks with a performance of disarming tenderness.”
Danny Leigh at the Financial Times agreed: “The moments that stay with you are those that still have something of that child’s eye view of wrestling: a baffled gaze up at fragile giants, lost in a sport where nothing and everything is real at once.”
The Iron Claw is now available to buy or rent digitally across a number of U.S. digital platforms. Find out more about the true story behind the Von Erich family here.
