Studio Ghibli’s next movie has (apparently) been revealed: The Last Guardian of Wind Valley, said to be directed by Hayao Miyazaki… but is it true?

Next to Disney, Studio Ghibli is the most iconic animation company in movie history – and one could (easily) argue its record is far stronger than the House of Mouse. Its filmography kicked off with 1986’s Castle in the Sky, and it’s been banger after banger ever since.

Whether it’s My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, or Howl’s Moving Castle, the anime studio’s iconography and impact on cinema cannot be understated.

After the incredible success of The Boy and the Heron last year, a rumor has emerged about its next big-screen project – but is it real?

Is The Last Guardian of Wind Valley happening?

No, The Last Guardian of Wind Valley isn’t real. It’s a completely made-up movie, and it’s currently unclear what film Studio Ghibli is working on next.

You’ve probably been fooled by a fake poster shared by YODA BBY ABY, the same Facebook page that led people to believe a Netflix remake of Spirited Away was in development – neither is true.

The caption (which is complete nonsense) also reads: “Embark on a magical journey with Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki. Director Miyazaki’s latest masterpiece, The Last Guardian of Wind Valley, where two brave children discover a mythical Guardian thought to be extinct.

“This enchanting tale of friendship, adventure, and courage will sweep you into the heart of Wind Valley, where playful giants once roamed and fiercely guarded their realm. Join us in theaters August 2024, for a spellbinding experience that celebrates the unbreakable bonds that protect us through life’s trials and tribulations.”

While it was believed Miyazaki was retiring after The Boy and the Heron, he simply can’t stay away from filmmaking. Whenever we have actual details about what’s next, you can count on us reporting it.
