Twisted Metal Season 2 was excitingly announced at the 2023 Game Awards, but there’s been a lack of news since. Luckily, star Anthony Mackie revealed filming started in August 2024.

Twisted Metal Season 1 premiered on Peacock in 2023 with heavy doses of action and fun, adding to the mounting evidence that the video game adaptation curse is over.

The Twisted Metal cast stars Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz, and the TV show follows an unnamed man with amnesia as he travels through an apocalyptic wasteland with a mysterious package.

If you’re excited about seeing more of this world on screen (and Calypso’s introduction…), here’s what’s been revealed so far.

Is there a Twisted Metal Season 2 release date?

Twisted Metal Season 2 has no release date – filming started in August 2024.

Twisted Metal was renewed for Season 2 in December 2023. Speaking to NBC Insider, showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith said, “The [writers’] room has started. We have an amazing team of writers. We’re discussing the arc of the season and what the first episode might be, looking at the big picture. I’m really excited.”

Given there’s filming and post-production to complete, we don’t expect Season 2 to drop until 2025.

Cast

Newbies including Anthony Carrigan, Richard de Klerk, and Patty Guggenheim have joined, while Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz return in Twisted Metal Season 2.

We can also expect to see some of the iconic characters from the video games making their small screen debut in Season 2, with Smith telling NBC Insider the team has a “really cool” direction for Dollface and the arrival of Mr. Grimm.

The showrunner explained, “[Grimm is] my favorite and I’m excited to capture what the fans are excited about seeing, but also [answer the question of]: ‘How does he exist in the world we’ve set up?’ I think there’s just going to be a lot of fun with him — what kind of character he is in this world and how does he interact with people like Sweet Tooth?”

What could the plot be?

Though there is no official synopsis, Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger that sets up Calypso’s deadly Twisted Metal tournament, something we expect to be the main plot point for the next season.

When asked how much of Season 2 will focus on the tournament, Smith teased, “On Cobra Kai, there were very much tournament seasons and consequence seasons, and this is very much a tournament season. I want everything to feel like it’s tied to the tournament, even if we aren’t in the tournament yet.

“I am hopeful it will surprise and delight those people who saw the finale of Episode 10 and were like, ‘I want to see more of that in a tournament setting.’ My goal is to capture that.”

Smith has also discussed all the various characters – new and old – and how he can’t wait to get them together in the tournament and see the different dynamics play out. The showrunner described this next season as him getting to open up the “toy box” that is Twisted Metal’s lore.

Mackie also spoke to Deadline about his hopes for John Doe’s arc in Season 2, saying: “He’s going to have some challenges come his way, that’s going to force his hand to be more of an adult and make some really tough decisions because you can’t be a milkman all your life. We’ve seen what happens to milkmen. So you have to decide what’s most important — hold your milkman status, or grow up and be an adult.”

Mackie previously shared his ideas for what a potential Season 2 could look like. In an interview with NBC Insider, Mackie explained that he would want a rematch with his clown mask-wearing nemesis Sweet Tooth and stated that “I’m not losing” the next match.
