Umbrella Academy creator reveals plans for spinoff with controversial character
NetflixThe Umbrella Academy creator, Steve Blackman, hopes to move forward with a spinoff series based on one controversial character.
After five years of multiversal adventures, The Umbrella Academy is coming to an end with its fourth and final season.
The Netflix show has centered on the Hargreeves siblings, a group continuously thrown from one universe to another in order to save it from the apocalypse they caused.
However, while Season 4 may spell the end for the young Academy members, creator Steve Blackman hopes to create a spinoff series based on the controversial villain/ the siblings’ father, Reginald Haregeeves.
Dexerto spoke to Blackman who expressed a desire to keep the Umbrella Academy universe going with different potential spinoffs.
While he did mention following the lives of side characters like Commission assassins Hazel and Cha Cha, the person Blackman really wanted to dive into on a deeper level was Reginald.
Blackman explained, “We had a great backstory for Reginald Hargreeves and his wife and we were literally going to tell his origin story in a very fun cold open.”
“We never got to do that because things got too expensive, but we knew a lot of it. We worked a lot on that. I had a big plan of what his background would be and I wanted to tell his story. Hopefully we can get the chance to show it in the future.”
Reginald Hargreeves has been a mysterious figure in The Umbrella Academy since Season 1. He’s always been a bit of a puppet master in the kids’ lives.
He was responsible for turning them into world-famous superheroes at the expense of their childhood. And, in Season 2, viewers discovered he was part of an alien race whose goal was to keep the human timeline intact at any cost, including allowing the world to end.
Throughout the three seasons of The Umbrella Academy, Reginald seemed to have an overarching plan for his children, but it was never fully spelled out.
A spinoff series could allow fans to finally get the answers they deserve about where Reginald came from, what his true motivations are, and why he decided to form the Umbrella Academy despite harboring disdain for his adopted children.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 premieres on August 8 through Netflix. For more information, check out updates on other Netflix shows, including Stranger Things Season 5 and Virgin River Season 6. You can also find new TV shows and TV shows streaming in August.
