Sometimes movies can be known by a few names, especially on social media, with Djinn’s Oblivion having people enthused with its fantasy storyline – but what’s the movie about?

In 2022, director George Miller released a fantasy romance that didn’t do so well at the box office. Djinn’s Oblivion is also known under its official title Three Thousand Years of Longing. The movie starred Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.

Djinn’s Oblivion has gained some traction online as movie clips have people entranced to keep watching. A popular clip includes local fishermen finding a seemingly ordinary rock among their catch of the day. But that rock is something more and goes through various changes from being chucked and used in a wall.

What is Djinn’s Oblivion?

Djinn’s Oblivion tells the story of a centuries-old djinn who’s released from his bottle by a professor and dives into his many stories throughout the years.

Three Thousand Years of Longing (aka Djinn’s Oblivion) is based on a 1994  short story “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye” by A. S. Byatt. Idris Elba stars as the djinn with Tilda Swinton as the professor. Alithea Binnie (Swinton) is a British narratology scholar who tends to have hallucinogenic dreams.

While on a trip to Istanbul, she purchased a unique antique bottle and set loose the djinn. Just like Aladdin and classic tales, the djinn offers her three wishes. With some set guidelines of course. But Alithea refuses and believes making wishes is a mistake. In return, the djinn tells her three of his life stories. As the movie progresses, a romance begins to flourish.

The popular video seen on TikTok is one of the djinn’s stories, titled “Djinn’s Oblivion” of how he was entrapped in the bottle by King Solomon. Unable to escape on his own, he was chucked around until being found by a slave named Gulten. A favored concubine who asks for love, but it is met with a horrible fate.

The movie wasn’t the biggest success at the box office despite its leading actors. With a $60million budget, the movie only made $20million. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie received a 71% rating with critics saying, “Although its story isn’t as impressive as its visual marvels, it’s hard not to admire Three Thousand Years of Longing’s sheer ambition.”

Three Thousand Years of Longing went up against the vampire movie The Invitation and Breaking during its initial release.
