What is the Suits spinoff about? Suits: L.A. explained
USA NetworkA proposed Suits spinoff – titled Suits: L.A. – has just been green-lit for a pilot, and we now have details concerning what the series is about.
It’s been quite a year in the world of Suits, in spite of the fact that the show was cancelled back in 2019. The legal comedy-drama – which starred Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams – received a new lease of life when the series was picked up by Netflix.
That resulted in new audiences discovering the show on the streaming service, and those old episodes turning Suits into the most-watched show in the world for much of 2023.
That success led to speculation that Suits might return, and while we aren’t getting new episodes of the original anytime soon, a spinoff is now officially being developed by NBC.
What is the Suits spinoff about? Suits: L.A. explained
Suits: L.A. will focus on Ted Black, a federal prosecutor from New York, who is now reinventing himself as a lawyer in Los Angeles. Here’s the official synopsis, as per The Hollywood Reporter:
“His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career. Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved.”
That’s in addition to another character description Matthew Belloni posted in his Puck newsletter in Jaanuary, about a Suits: L.A. lawyer called Erica, who is “30s, black, SoCal native, and Harvard law alum. She’s jockeying to be made Head of Entertainment. She’s great at closing clients but struggles elsewhere. Smarter than everyone.”
Will the original Suits cast appear?
When asked during a red-carpet interview if he’d appear in a new iteration of Suits – whatever that might be – Patrick J. Adams said he’d be keen.
“If I got the phone call, I’m ready to suit up again,” Adams told Variety at this year’s Golden Globes (again via THR). “I love the show, I love the character and I loved working with all these people.”
While Gabriel Macht says he’s just happy that Suits is finding a new audience, saying: “It’s an amazing thing. We had some great success when the show was on and all over the world, there were people downloading it, pirate downloading it. And then at a certain point, Netflix came in and said, ‘Why don’t we put this out there?’ And it’s just got incredible eyes and we’re very grateful for it.”
