Who plays Griselda on Netflix?
NetflixAll six episodes of Netflix’s Griselda are now available to watch – but who plays the drug lord in the limited series?
The story of famed Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco has been making headlines this week thanks to a new Netflix show exploring her cocaine trade in 1980s Miami.
Though some – including Blanco’s real-life son – have had their issues with the limited series, others have highly praised the performance of the leading role.
Now that all six episodes are available to stream, here’s everything you need to know about who plays Griselda on the Netflix series.
Who plays Griselda on Netflix?
Colombian actress Sofia Vergara plays Griselda on Netflix’s limited series of the same name.
The star is best known for her 11-year tenure on the ABC sitcom Modern Family, where she played Gloria Pritchard. Griselda marks Vergara’s first significant dramatic – or non-comedic – role.
As Dexerto previously reported, Vergara wanted there to be a physical distinction between her past characters and her role as Griselda Blanco. “The most important thing for me was to disappear. Sofia to disappear, Gloria from Modern Family to disappear. I didn’t want people to think it was Gloria with a fake nose,” Vergara explained.
“It took us a lot of tests to try out different ways. I was nervous about it because I sometimes watch movies and it distracts me a lot to see the wig that’s jumping out. So I wanted her to look human and also to be able to act with all those things that I had on. I had fake teeth, I had plastic all over my face, my eyebrows were fake. Even my nose was fake.”
On top of this, the star also feels that her acting roles are more “limited” thanks to her natural Colombian accent. Speaking to the LA Times, she added, “I’m always looking for characters because there’s not much that I can play with this stupid accent. I can’t play a scientist or be in Schindler’s List. My acting jobs are kind of limited.”
Over on social media, Sofia Vergara’s performance in Netflix’s Griselda has been a firm hit.
“GET SOFIA VERGARA AN EMMY RIGHT NOW!!!” one fan posted on X/Twitter, with another adding, “I’m so sleepy but Sofia Vergara is killing this role.”
Our review of the show stated: “What’s particularly joyous to see is that dialogue is just as much in Spanish as it is in English. In Spanish-led scenes, Vergara’s inhibitions drop completely, feeling Griselda’s peaks and pits from her heart without needing to think about it. It’s easier for us to make the comparisons when we see Vergara act in English, though she consistently gives it her all.”
